The cost of business gas depends on various factors, including:

  • Your premises' location
  • Your gas usage and timing
  • The size of your workforce
  • The energy efficiency of your workplace

The Energy Bill Relief Scheme, introduced on October 1, 2021, to assist businesses facing high energy costs, ended on March 31, 2023. It was succeeded by the Energy Bills Discount Scheme on April 1, 2023, which ran until March 31, 2024. As of now, no additional government support has been announced.

Unlike domestic gas, business gas lacks a price cap, making it susceptible to volatility. While rates have dropped from the 2022 peak, they remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. Although future market trends are uncertain, historical patterns show rates typically increasing year by year.

This makes comparing business gas rates crucial to securing the best possible deal. A fixed-rate contract can protect you from price fluctuations and prevent you from rolling onto your supplier's often costly out-of-contract rates.

To give you an estimate of current costs, here are the latest business gas rates for January 2025:

Business SizeGas Unit Price per kWhGas Daily Standing Charge
Micro Business7.4p38.6p
Small Business7.3p38.6p
Medium Business7.6p45.8p
Large Business7.2p50.7p

Note: These prices are accurate as of January 2025. Rates and bills may vary depending on your meter type and business location. The prices you’re quoted could differ from the averages provided. The figures shown represent average unit rates and standing charges for contracts sold by Nexcharge between January 2 and January 9, 2025.

Every business uses energy differently, so these figures should serve as a general guide. Contact the energy experts at Nexcharge, and we’ll help you find a business gas tariff tailored to your specific needs.

The cost of your business gas bills depends on your contract type, rates, and gas usage. To provide an estimate, we've analyzed the latest rates for January 2025. Here's a rough idea of annual costs based on your business size and typical usage:

Business SizeAnnual Usage (kWh)Estimated Cost Per Year
Micro Business5,000 to 15,000 kWh£881 (based on 10,000 kWh)
Small Business15,000 to 30,000 kWh£1,783 (based on 22,500 kWh)
Medium Business30,000 to 65,000 kWh£3,777 (based on 47,500 kWh)
Large BusinessMore than 65,000 kWh£4,865 (based on 65,000 kWh)

These figures provide a general guide, but actual costs may vary depending on your specific contract and energy usage.

It’s easy to lose track of your business gas supplier, especially with long-term fixed contracts that only require attention when it’s time for renewal.

To find out who your supplier is, check your latest bill or email correspondence. Alternatively, you can call the Meter Number Helpline at 0870 6081524 or visit the Find My Supplier website. Make sure you have your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) handy. For more details, refer to our guide on MPAN and MPRN numbers.

  • Variable Rate: Rates fluctuate based on wholesale prices and market conditions.
  • Blend and Extend: Renew your current deal with your supplier at competitive rates by extending the contract.
  • Flex Approach: Ideal for large businesses, allowing bulk energy purchases in advance to capitalize on lower wholesale rates.
  • Pass Through: Fixes the wholesale price but lets other costs vary, offering protection against volatile wholesale rates.
  • Green: Gas sourced from sustainable, eco-friendly sources, though availability in the UK is currently limited.

Understanding how much energy similar businesses consume can help you determine if your gas usage is excessive. Like electricity, gas consumption based on size and energy needs of your business.

Here’s a breakdown of average business gas usage by business size:

Business SizeLow-End Usage (kWh)High-End Usage (kWh)
Micro Business5,00015,000
Small Business15,00030,000
Medium Business30,00065,000
Large BusinessMore than 65,000

This guide can help you benchmark your usage and identify areas for potential savings.

If your gas bills are too high, it may not only be due to an expensive tariff—you might be consuming more than necessary. This could result from habits like overheating your premises or from poor energy efficiency within your business property.

To give you an idea of typical usage, here are the average annual gas consumption figures for SMEs:

  • Microbusinesses: Defined as having fewer than 10 employees and an annual turnover under €2 million, microbusinesses typically use around 10,000 kWh of gas annually. Learn more in our guide to microbusiness energy.
  • Small Businesses: With fewer than 50 employees and an annual turnover under €10 million, small businesses consume an average of 25,000 kWh of gas per year. Check out our guide to small businesses in the UK for more details.
  • Medium-Sized Businesses: Defined as having fewer than 250 employees and an annual turnover under €50 million, medium-sized businesses generally use about 45,000 kWh of gas annually.

These benchmarks can help you assess your gas usage and identify potential savings opportunities.

Green business gas is derived from environmentally sustainable sources, such as biomass from plants or animal waste. Unlike green electricity, which is widely available, the technology for producing eco-friendly gas is less developed, making green gas deals harder to come by.

Currently, green business gas is only available in specific regions of Great Britain. While solar and wind energy are widely distributed across the UK, access to green gas depends on your business's location.

To explore your options, check out our guide to renewable business energy or speak to our tech-enabled experts. If green gas isn’t available in your area, you can opt for a supplier that supports environmental projects and promotes sustainable energy in other ways.

The cheapest electricity supplier for your business depends on factors like your electricity usage patterns, total consumption, business size, and location. Below are the rates offered by a selection of suppliers as of January 2025:

An MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is a unique identifier for your gas meter, typically consisting of up to 11 digits. It’s used to identify the gas meter at your business location.

You can usually find your MPRN on your business gas bill, often under the "Details of charges" section.

If it’s not on your bill, you can search for it online by entering your postcode on the Find My Supplier website, or you can call the Meter Number Helpline at 0870 608 1524. Simply provide your business postcode and the first line of your address, and they will give you your MPRN and information about your current gas supplier.

For more information, check out our detailed guide to MPAN and MPRN.

In most cases, your gas meter won’t need replacing if it's a standard meter. However, if you have a smart meter, it might need to be swapped out if it’s not compatible with your new supplier.

Most businesses pay the standard 20% VAT on gas, but charities and not-for-profit organizations may be eligible for a reduced rate of 5%.

You might also qualify for a discount if your monthly gas usage is below 4,397 kWh. Check your latest bill to confirm your usage.

If you’re eligible for the reduced VAT rate, contact your gas supplier to request a VAT declaration form. For more information, refer to our guide on VAT for business gas and electricity.

If your gas is supplied by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT), you can still compare prices and switch suppliers. However, the process may take longer, and the deals might not be as competitive.

This is because supplying and maintaining IGTs involves higher costs, which often leads to higher standing charges. Additionally, IGT-related charges are not included in initial gas quotes, so you’ll need to factor these costs in separately.

To find the best deal, compare quotes from various suppliers. Some larger providers may absorb the IGT charges to attract your business, potentially offering better overall value.

Business gas prices change frequently, so the best way to ensure you're getting the best deal is to compare prices and switch suppliers. Signing up for a new deal as soon as your switching window opens can help you lock in lower rates and avoid potential price hikes.

Although business and domestic gas are measured in the same units, their tariffs differ in both cost and contract structure.

Business gas can appear more expensive, but the rates are often lower. The higher bill amounts are due to VAT being charged at the standard 20% rate for business gas and electricity, compared to the reduced 5% rate for domestic energy.

Microbusiness gas refers to gas deals specifically designed for microbusinesses.

A microbusiness is defined as a company with no more than 10 employees and an annual turnover of less than £1.7 million. Many suppliers offer special rates tailored for businesses of this size.

To qualify as a microbusiness, you must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Use less than 200,000 kWh of gas per year

  • Use less than 55,000 kWh of electricity per year

  • Have fewer than 10 employees (or their full-time equivalent) and an annual turnover or balance sheet total not exceeding €2 million (£1.7 million)

These tailored gas deals offer cost-effective solutions for small businesses.
