What factors impact business gas prices?
The cost of business gas depends on various factors, including:
What government support is available for managing high business gas bills?
The Energy Bill Relief Scheme, introduced on October 1, 2021, to assist businesses facing high energy costs, ended on March 31, 2023. It was succeeded by the Energy Bills Discount Scheme on April 1, 2023, which ran until March 31, 2024. As of now, no additional government support has been announced.
Unlike domestic gas, business gas lacks a price cap, making it susceptible to volatility. While rates have dropped from the 2022 peak, they remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. Although future market trends are uncertain, historical patterns show rates typically increasing year by year.
This makes comparing business gas rates crucial to securing the best possible deal. A fixed-rate contract can protect you from price fluctuations and prevent you from rolling onto your supplier's often costly out-of-contract rates.

What is the annual gas consumption of businesses?
If your gas bills are too high, it may not only be due to an expensive tariff—you might be consuming more than necessary. This could result from habits like overheating your premises or from poor energy efficiency within your business property.
To give you an idea of typical usage, here are the average annual gas consumption figures for SMEs:
These benchmarks can help you assess your gas usage and identify potential savings opportunities.
What does green business gas mean?
Green business gas is derived from environmentally sustainable sources, such as biomass from plants or animal waste. Unlike green electricity, which is widely available, the technology for producing eco-friendly gas is less developed, making green gas deals harder to come by.
Currently, green business gas is only available in specific regions of Great Britain. While solar and wind energy are widely distributed across the UK, access to green gas depends on your business's location.
To explore your options, check out our guide to renewable business energy or speak to our tech-enabled experts. If green gas isn’t available in your area, you can opt for a supplier that supports environmental projects and promotes sustainable energy in other ways.
Which business gas supplier offers the lowest rates in January 2025?
The cheapest electricity supplier for your business depends on factors like your electricity usage patterns, total consumption, business size, and location. Below are the rates offered by a selection of suppliers as of January 2025:
Supplier | Unit Rate (per kWh) | Standing Charge (daily) |
---|---|---|
British Gas | 7.6p | 62.4p |

Yu Energy | 7.6p | No standing charge |
Compare these rates to find the best deal for your business based on your specific requirements.
An MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is a unique identifier for your gas meter, typically consisting of up to 11 digits. It’s used to identify the gas meter at your business location.
You can usually find your MPRN on your business gas bill, often under the "Details of charges" section.
If it’s not on your bill, you can search for it online by entering your postcode on the Find My Supplier website, or you can call the Meter Number Helpline at 0870 608 1524. Simply provide your business postcode and the first line of your address, and they will give you your MPRN and information about your current gas supplier.
For more information, check out our detailed guide to MPAN and MPRN.
In most cases, your gas meter won’t need replacing if it's a standard meter. However, if you have a smart meter, it might need to be swapped out if it’s not compatible with your new supplier.
Most businesses pay the standard 20% VAT on gas, but charities and not-for-profit organizations may be eligible for a reduced rate of 5%.
You might also qualify for a discount if your monthly gas usage is below 4,397 kWh. Check your latest bill to confirm your usage.
If you’re eligible for the reduced VAT rate, contact your gas supplier to request a VAT declaration form. For more information, refer to our guide on VAT for business gas and electricity.
If your gas is supplied by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT), you can still compare prices and switch suppliers. However, the process may take longer, and the deals might not be as competitive.
This is because supplying and maintaining IGTs involves higher costs, which often leads to higher standing charges. Additionally, IGT-related charges are not included in initial gas quotes, so you’ll need to factor these costs in separately.
To find the best deal, compare quotes from various suppliers. Some larger providers may absorb the IGT charges to attract your business, potentially offering better overall value.
Business gas prices change frequently, so the best way to ensure you're getting the best deal is to compare prices and switch suppliers. Signing up for a new deal as soon as your switching window opens can help you lock in lower rates and avoid potential price hikes.
Although business and domestic gas are measured in the same units, their tariffs differ in both cost and contract structure.
Business gas can appear more expensive, but the rates are often lower. The higher bill amounts are due to VAT being charged at the standard 20% rate for business gas and electricity, compared to the reduced 5% rate for domestic energy.
Microbusiness gas refers to gas deals specifically designed for microbusinesses.
A microbusiness is defined as a company with no more than 10 employees and an annual turnover of less than £1.7 million. Many suppliers offer special rates tailored for businesses of this size.
To qualify as a microbusiness, you must meet at least one of the following criteria:
Use less than 200,000 kWh of gas per year
Use less than 55,000 kWh of electricity per year
Have fewer than 10 employees (or their full-time equivalent) and an annual turnover or balance sheet total not exceeding €2 million (£1.7 million)
These tailored gas deals offer cost-effective solutions for small businesses.
Authenticity, clarity, and trust form the foundation of every client relationship we build.
