Here’s an overview of typical electricity consumption based on business size to give you an idea of how much your business might be using:

Business SizeLow-End Usage (kWh)High-End Usage (kWh)
Micro Business5,00015,000
Small Business15,00025,000
Medium Business25,00050,000
Large BusinessMore than 55,000 kWh

If your business consumes over 100,000 kWh of electricity annually, suppliers usually classify you as a large business, and your energy supply may be managed differently.

Several factors influence a business electricity bill, including:

  • Unit Rate: The cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity used, depending on your supplier and contract terms.

  • Standing Charge: A fixed daily fee for maintaining your connection to the grid, regardless of your usage.

  • Usage Level: The total amount of electricity consumed during the billing period.

  • Contract Type: Whether you have a fixed-rate, variable-rate, or bespoke contract, which impacts pricing.

  • VAT: Typically, businesses pay 20% VAT on electricity, though some may qualify for a reduced rate.

  • Non-Commodity Charges: Government levies like the Climate Change Levy (CCL) and costs for network maintenance.

  • Renewable Energy Fees: Additional costs if you choose green or sustainable electricity plans.

Understanding these factors can help you manage and optimize your electricity expenses.

Here are the main differences between business electricity and domestic electricity deals:

  • No Dual Fuel Deals: Unlike residential energy plans, business energy contracts don’t typically offer dual fuel options. However, some suppliers may allow you to use the same provider for both electricity and gas.

  • Longer Contracts: Business energy contracts usually last between 1 to 4 years, whereas residential contracts are typically one year.

  • No Cooling-Off Period: Business electricity contracts don’t come with a cooling-off period. It’s important to consult an advisor and carefully select the right deal, as these contracts are legally binding.

  • No Price Cap: Commercial electricity rates aren’t subject to the price caps that apply to domestic rates, which can result in more price variability.

If you’re on a long-term fixed electricity contract, you may not need to think about your supplier until it’s time for renewal.

However, if you’re unsure who your business electricity supplier is and can’t find the information on your latest bill, you’ll need to contact your regional electricity distributor.

You can compare business electricity deals and secure a new contract up to six months before your current deal ends. However, the actual switch will only happen once your existing contract expires.

Switching business electricity typically takes around six weeks. To avoid being moved onto higher out-of-contract rates, it's best to compare deals and finalize a new contract about two months before your current one ends.

No, your electricity supply will not be interrupted during the switch. Your current and new suppliers will coordinate the transfer date to ensure a smooth transition, keeping your power uninterrupted. Since the electricity is delivered through existing infrastructure, there’s no need for any digging or drilling at your premises.

At Nexcharge, we use smart data to make business electricity comparisons easy. To get started, we just need your business name and postcode to compare electricity rates.

To complete the switch, you'll also need to provide your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) or MPRN.

You can find your MPAN on your electricity bill, often labeled as the "Supply Number" or "S Number." It’s a 21-digit number starting with the letter 'S,' which identifies the supply meter at your property, though it won’t be shown on the meter itself.

If you have a standard electricity meter, it’s unlikely that you'll need to replace it when switching suppliers. However, if you have a smart meter, a replacement might be required if your current meter isn't compatible with your new supplier. For more information, contact your supplier.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK Government initiative that allows you to sell any excess renewable energy you generate back to the National Grid. Launched on January 1, 2020, the SEG replaced the Feed-in Tariff (FIT), which closed to new applications on April 1, 2019.

Learn more about how you can earn by selling renewable energy to the grid.

If your business applied for the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme before April 1, 2019, it should be enrolled in the program. This enables you to earn money by selling any excess electricity generated by your solar panels back to the National Grid.

Your earnings will depend on the number of solar panels installed, and your energy supplier must be a registered FiT licensee.

Switching to a business electricity supplier that uses renewable energy can lower your energy costs and enhance your company's reputation. Showing your commitment to sustainability can make a positive impact on your customers.

Green electricity, sourced from sunlight, wind, rain, plants, and geothermal heat, is readily available across most of the UK. Get in touch with our tech-enabled team to compare quotes from green energy suppliers and find the best deal for your business.

Business electricity rates fluctuate regularly, so the best way to secure a competitive deal is by comparing prices and switching suppliers. To lock in favorable rates and avoid potential price increases, it's wise to arrange a new contract as soon as your switching window opens.
